Well, first of all you can get gammoned in the first position, which can't happen in the second position.

But also you give up the value of cube ownership if you pay off holding the cube. This should be kind of obvious. Let's assume that you never get gammoned: if you pay now, in either position, your equity is -1 when he rolls a 2 and +1 when he doesn't, for a total of 14/36 * the value of the cube.

Your equity when you pay later is X. Well, trivially X is higher when you hold the cube than when you don't. Since your pay now equity doesn't depend on cube position and your pay later equity does, it stands to reason that paying later is relatively better when you hold the cube.
