It's called a paradox because common sense suggests that if you have a double in position A but not in position B then A should be better than B. Note, for example, that the phrase "too good to double" carries the connotation that there is a linear scale of "goodness" and that as you move along that scale, there is some threshold beyond which you are "good enough to double" and a second threshold beyond which you are "too good to double."
A paradox, in common parlance, isn't necessarily something contradictory or impossible. Something that violates common sense or superficially seems the opposite of what should be true can qualify.
