I also play in competition mode because I regard a displayed pip count as a crutch that I want to avoid relying on. The skill of approximating the pip count without doing a count is, IMO, less important than the skill of recognizing when you ought to stop and do at least an approximate pip count. You said that if you had known the pip count, then running would have made a lot of sense to you. That suggests to me that you've overcome the hard part, namely recognizing that this is a position where there are very different game plans to choose from, and where knowing the pip count will materially inform your decision. So now you just need to train yourself to stop and count pips (at least approximately) when this kind of position pops up.

What platitude did you have in mind OTB, by the way?
