That seems plausible. But out of curiousity, we might repeat this hypothesis before every play and see how often it actually applies.

A well-known backgammon book has lots of problems with short solutions, many of which state some rule of thumb like this one which the problem is asserted to illustrate. I've thought to present a selection of the problems with a list of the rules of thumb applied, and wondered how well they really match up -- whether they're actually useful in solving the problems, or are more of an after the thought "the solution is such and such, and oh, by the way, that solution neatly matches such and such rule of thumb."
