Congratulations on getting a GridGammon account. There are some good players on GG and by default, you are welcome to watch anyone, but it is better if you do not ask, "Do you mind if I watch?" Many players are intensely focused on the match and do not want the distraction of having to answer your question.
There is a menu at the top of the screen in GG. Choose "Options" and then choose "Autosave Settings." Then under "Format" check "sgg" and you probably want to uncheck the others. Make sure that "Save Folder" is C:\Program Files (x86)\GridGammon\SaveGame\.
In XG, when you import a file, make sure it comes from the same folder, C:\Program Files (x86)\GridGammon\SaveGame\. Import the "sgg" file into XG.
Sorry, but I do not know the answer to your Alpha question.
On my wish list for GG, I would like to see them produce a version with a clock. If this is too tough for them, I would like to see them have a column that rates all players according to the average amount of time it takes them to make a decision. I feel everyone is happier if slow players play other slow players and fast players play other fast players. If I play someone on GG whom I feel is too slow, I put him/her on my mental list of slow players and I am reluctant to play this person again.
I hope you enjoy your experience on GG.
