The hit is pretty much mandatory. Blue trails in the race, has the better board, and White has already escaped one checker. You could also throw in a couple of more of Magriel's bold vs. safe criteria, but the bottom line is that Blue has little to lose by hitting, and could gain a lot.

After the hit, the 6 is easy. The midpoint needs to be unstacked, and starting the 7pt is certainly useful. The only other 6 is to to play up to the 18pt. That would give White a double direct shot with 1 and 6. Playing down to the 7pt gives White only a couple of fly shots.
