White needs thirteen crossovers to save gammon. Pointing on her head with 8/4* 6/4 definitely ups the gammon rate, but it also gives her a chance to be back in the game the 30% of the time she shakes a six.

If there were some safe non-blot-leaving play I'd say thirteen crossovers is enough of a lead to just play safe. But there aren't.

The alternative play is 8/4 6/off, which takes a checker off. That's good, but it looks to me that pointing on head will make for an easier bearoff since there won't be a gap to negotiate. I'll point on her head and hope she doesn't roll a six. If I get that far, it should be easy going from there.
