Keep the deadbolt on. (almost) Every backgammon disaster starts with someone opening the door to Mr Fuckup. If you dont open it, he can't come in.

Of course, away from the metaphor, its a game of risk and reward, so judging the risks is appropriate, however, when I reference this, its much more about unnecessary risk that doesn't reward appropriately. Its also a technique I use to pull back from high volatility when I dont want that volatility. It doesn't always work, but it keeps me in check. Sometimes.
