I think one key to improving in backgammon, beyond a certain basic level, is realizing that getting doubles is not the key to success. Perhaps the standard response from those of us who know better when answering forum posts that complain about luck ought to be get gnu and learn how to use it bee-och, and then note that the side that loses is more often the side that "scores" worse according to the analysis sheet.

Of course then there are fast driving little redheads who can't figure out how to get gnu to work properly anyway, even if they can play a mean game of bg.
