You can see my position in this thread for why this doesn't work. Even if you're 0-95% certain about the correct action, you still shouldn't double.

Likewise, you don't need gammons in the picture. If you're up -3, -8, and holding a 2 cube, IMO you'd better be fairly sure it's a drop before reaching for that cube. I'd rather take my chances duking it out at -3, -6 than to lose the entire match because I doubled too early.
