Normally, I would not consider the Bagai in a position like this, where my opponent has a 3-point board, and all his checkers still in play. So my first reaction here was, “No way!” But then, as I tried to find a reasonable alternative, I found that the safe plays lead to a brittle position.

  • j (jump) = 8/3, 7/3
Large doublets (66 and 55) leave a shot next turn. So does 64. Stacking 5 checkers on the 3pt looks bad, but as they say, this ain’t no beauty contest.
  • A (Attack) = 8/3, 5/1
55 leaves two blots. 66, 65, and 54 leave one. 53 busts the board and leaves a blot outside.
  • A (Attack) = 7/2, 6/2 = The Bagai
11 shots now; 66 and 55 still leave shots next time. After that, the position very robust.

I can see the argument for the Bagai, but I’ll go for the play I would probably make over the board: j = 8/3, 7/3.
