The short answer, David, is that your ranking is perfect! The remainder of this post explains why.

The underlined Glasses family is an areal Nactation family. Membership is based on the areas of the board where checkers are moved. In the underlined Glasses family, 1 die moves a checker to a destination on the far side of the board, 2 dice move “down” to destinations in the outer board, and 1 die “jumps” over the bar to a destination in the inner board.

Thus, the play in question, 18/6 11/7, belongs in the underlined G family.

  • Far: 18/14
  • Down: 14/10, 11/7
  • Jump: 10/6

The plays that make the 9pt rank at the top of the underlined Glasses family. That’s because they result in more owned points than the other family members. Under the Hit-More-6 Rule, owning more points is the second tie breaker, and since none of the family members hit, it is the primary factor in this position.

After that, you rank plays using the 6pt Convention, which is the third part of Hit-More-6. It first compares the locations of owned points, assigning higher ranking when owned points are closer to the 6pt. Second, it compares the destinations of checkers that become blots or spares when they are moved in a play. Closer to the 6pt is better, except in the outer board, where farther wins.

Blots and spares are what decides the ranking for rank 1 versus rank 2, and also for ranks 3-11. The entire family is given below. Note that in ranks 3-11, you cannot get closer to the 6pt than actually landing a checker there. The plays that do that rank above the plays that do not. If you cannot land on the 6pt, then landing on the 4pt is the next best thing. All the plays that land there rank above the plays that land on the 3pt. And so on. In ranks 3-4, landing on the 9pt outranks landing on the 7pt. Remember, in the outer board, farther from the 6pt is better.
