Herb Gurland, Former Giant, Passed Today

I am deeply saddened to learn of Herb's passing. I have been privileged to have been touched by the wonderful attributes he possessed, and can confirm many of these attributes and deeds described by others here. When I was President of the USBGF Herb was someone I would contact for advice.

Herb and I used to hang out at tournaments together beginning in the 90's. When I played at the Coterie and Ace Point Club in New York he would visit.

When I moved to Florida, he visited once a year for a number of years. He sought out Mike Corbett to play, and really enjoyed the experience, win, lose, or draw. Our tournament meet-ups lessened as both he and I attended fewer tournaments.

I have not seen Herb for a long time but at least once a year, every year we have had hour long telephone conversations. I always hung up from these feeling grateful to have Herb as a friend.
