It's pretty cunning; I saw it demonstrated in last fall in Vegas. It plugs into a PC with a USB port and interfaces with GNU. As I recall, you have to punch something to tell it your move is over, but only have to put in the dice if it is ambiguous. Most of the moves (90%) it figures our your roll based on what you moved. It also has algorithms to figure out where a 6th or 7th checker on a point must be located.

It wasn't perfect, but certainly a good effort.
