Seriously, as you know I think - no, I know - the Confederate flag is a racist symbol. Anyone who claims differently may only be excused on the grounds of total ignorance or mental incompetence, which also signals that they are unqualified to discuss US history or politics. BUT ... I completely support the right of anyone to mark themselves as a racist douchebag by flying said flag. The 1st Amendment is first for a reason, and even bigoted assholes are entitled to speak their minds, or even lie about why they are flying it. ("No, really, I am honoring those brave men who fought against the United States because ... Uh ... 'Stonewall' is such a cool nickname.")

Even without all of that, I hate rewriting history! Southern good old boys would have adorned a car they named "General Lee" with Confederate flags. Even if THEY were rewriting history. ("No, really, Blacks were happier under slavery!") Erasing that flag is similar to bowdlerizing Huck Finn, or pulling it from the shelves. Not as bad, of course, because if you strip away the Daisy Dukes ... well if you did that you could ditch the rest of the show, but it would have to air on cable. ;-)
