"1) It would allow players who want preferential seeding to pay more for themselves by making sure that they sell for the highest auction price. "

That would certainly make running a tournament more profitable, encouraging more to direct. It would also make auctions exciting and relevant again. By George, Neil, who says you can't have a good idea once in awhile!?

Years ago the auctioneer at a small tournament reminded his (very rich) wife that he should himself be sold for the highest price. (Ah, vanity!) There were other wealthy folks in the field, who went crazy outbidding each other over a visitor to their shores: Paul Magriel. So the auctioneer cost his wife five grand. The field of thirty-two sold for the equivalent of $40K.

The most exciting auction I ever saw was at the last World Cup when a certain Australian gambler with a taste for action, and a wealthy but badly overmatched fellow who had somehow made it to the final eight, bid those final eight up to $49,500 in the horse race auction.

And Herb Roman once showed me a sheet from the old days in Monte Carlo, '77 or '78 I think, when the pool set a record, reaching around $200,000.
