In the first position, White is behind in the race and has the checker on the 21 to worry about. This gives Blue an additional path to victory instead of just racing or waiting for a shot while White comes around the board - hit somewhere followed by a 6 while White is on the bar.

In the second position, you have a gap on the 6, which is increases Blue's shot equity from what it would normally be in a 22-anchor game.
