Whoops, misread Tim's comments leading me to believe it was the player on roll that was playing at GS. I already worked through this in XG at this point, but I would not have changed from the DMP play at GG, I certainly don't mind more volatility (and blots) at that score. I did find this very interesting at GS since it appears that the potential for the forth check back (and the subsequent gammons) plays an important role in the correct move here.
