In Response To: Pricing (Bob Koca)

Currently our software will not enter an illegal move into XG. I believe a lot of things have to be done to do this, even by hand, and I have no idea how an illegal move will affect PR's.

I emailed Justin Nunez and asked him how he handles illegal moves when he transcribes and what it does to PR and here is his response:

"I enter it as an illegal move, as it was played, which is an option under the "action" tab. It will clearly appear as an illegal play to anyone reviewing the match file. I'm not sure how it affects the PR, but I would guess that it would display the amount of equity the illegal play gained or lost, regardless of whether or not it matches the actual dice rolled. Sometimes it may be higher than than the best possible legal play given the actual dice roll. I definitely do not change the roll to match the illegal play."

Bottom line I think everyone is better off if legal moves are forced by the software and required to be played.

Right now, in the finals and semifinals of major tournaments, when legal moves are the rule, I have always believed that a monitor should be assigned to the match to help the players point out legal moves, verify what the dice said, verify if the dice are cocked, verify if it was a legal roll (many other items that constitute a legal roll), and keep and verify the score and clock settings. We have all watched streamed matches and finals matches, even in Monte Carlo, where these accidental infractions happened (maybe not always accidental) and everyone, including most honest players, would prefer to have help to insure that it is a fair playing field and it would be a relief to have an experienced "witness" to help assure the important aspects of the game are adhered to. In some ways, our program will do some of these things which I believe is an improvement to the game.

For example, one of the major objections to Legal Moves that some people have is thinking that a player may intentionally not point out an illegal play when it is to their advantage, and this software would eliminate that risk by alerting the players when there is such a move. I see that as only a positive, both in match play and money games. There will also be an electronic means of checking the score in case the players disagree. And all of this without changing the basic flow of the game, the ability to roll your dice (or use a baffle box or tube if you prefer).

I am sure that if you think long and hard and try to come up with every possible negative you can come up with more, and I'm not about to say this is a "perfect" solution to the game that solves all problems....but across the board I have had a tremendous number of emails and calls from top players all over the world who are excited about this software and can't wait to have it. Even if it is not perfect and maybe there will occasionally be a couple of complications or problems (things break and people make mistakes with hardware and software), the good far outweighs the bad, and lastly, if you don't like it, at least for now, no one is forcing you to use it. (Some day it may be mandatory at some tournaments, and I hope it will be affordable enough where virtually every serious tournament player will have it.)
