It's a trap!

If the trap play were required, 8/2 5/2 would be the correct move. In the event of White hitting Blue's blot on the 8-point, Blue can recycle his checker, and attack her blot on the 23-point. Not that bad at this score: 2away-Crawford. Nevertheless, there is an important feature regarding White's position. She has already accumulated tons of wastage, and probably she will go on with doing that. Therefore, the pip count doesn't reflect the true situation in the race. For this reason, alternative plays might be interesting. 8/2 8/5 clears the 8-point neatly; and 17/8 creates a new attacking builder. Despite of White's disastrous wastage situation, and with regard to the score (Blue's gammon value = 1) I tend to the trap play. Although the subject of this thread might be a trap, too :-). 8/2 5/2 makes a 5-point home, increases the degree of contact, and might bring some additional gammons. In unlimited games, however, I would like to play the much more conservative play 17/8.
