I watched the final match and it went to DMP and Tuvya had a very tough play to make. He made a brave play, and was immediately punished by a 1-1 super joker from Fernando that clearly won him the match and that was it.
After the game we discussed the position along with Mochy and we all had different opinions, however, I told Tuvya that I did like his play and would have made the same play -- XG confirmed that it was the right play, and that made Tuvya fell a lot better, as he thought he might have thrown the match away on that play. (First place consolation is $16,000 and second is $8,000, and while they might have hedged, since they are friends as we are all part of the backgammon learning center.)
In the semis Fernando defeated Mochy, and Tuvya had beating several great players including Stepan Nuiyants. After the match Stepan told me I should be very proud of my student, and I certainly am. Tuvya was literally a beginner less than 2 years ago and he is a Giant Killer and plays at a very respectable PR most of the time, but just as important to me, he is always a gentleman over the board.
I am also very happy for my good friend and teaching partner, Fernando. His lovely wife watched as he won and we all celebrated together.
Let's not forget that both Joe Russell and Gus Contos cashed and beat a lot of great players themselves before their dice went bad.
Matt Reklaitis and I were also going strong for quite a while, each with many wins before losing. I gained a lot of respect for his game watching him and discussing plays.
And lastly, Doug Mayfield. It is not an accident that he has been doing so well these past couple of years since he retired from the medical profession to work on his backgammon. On the Mochy Proficiency exam there was one player with a higher score at this tournament, but Doug actually lost the fewest PR points on the quiz.
Hat's off to Cliff Pappas and Max who got to the semis in doubles and lost out to a couple of novices by the names of Akiko and Falafel (and they lost in the finals).
Personally, I had a great event, losing my first match and winning the next six and lost in the money round of the main and the seniors and in speed gammon (I did manage to beat Michy). My only two losses in the main were against Sergy who was a finalist. It was truly fun!
