Hitting on the 5pt limits the opponent's alternatives. Otherwise, he will be free to anchor or make a point on his side.
The problem is the 6. If you hit, then the most logical 6 is to hit again, 8/5* 8/2*. That's a great way to wow the watchers, but it could easily backfire. Blue has only 8 checkers in the zone. Abandoning the 8pt in order to leave two blots inside seems like an overplay to me.
Hit and split, X = 24/18 8/5*, is another possibility. That would leave 1, 3, 4, 5, and 6 as numbers that hit back. For that reason, I would not hit at all.
Running, R = 24/15, dupes 3 nicely. That is my play.
