The key to finding the right move is to notice that White is at critical mass. She will leave a shot with more than half(!) her numbers, including a double shot with 62. If White does leave a shot, Blue doesn't want blots on his own side of the board. For that reason, he should solidly make his (strong) 8pt.

Returning to the original board position, let's change the roll from 51 to 41. (a) Blue's 9pt is less valuable than his 8pt, and (b) 13/8 sets up 2 extra numbers to make the 3pt. Blue should therefore spread his builders (though close), despite the axiom of buttoning up when the opponent is at critical mass.
