Chouette with a twist/and a math question

We played about 150 games...don't have an exact count. (I think that we could have played twice as many games if Herb didn't keep counting the pips and then forgetting what the other side counted.)
So, I guess you could say it happened about every 40 games.
Our rules are that if we have 6 or more players the box can take a partner, but it is not mandatory, but if it is your turn to be partner, you have no choice.
There once was a player in our game who suddenly decided that he had to get out of the game for a while to make "an important phone call" and it seemed that this happened whenever it was his turn to be partners in the box with a weaker player. (I did mention that he used to be in our game.)
We do have some other interesting rules in our chou that have evolved over the years. One of them is that when a new player gets into the game, he gets to play immediately. This was because we usually play in a coffee house or bar or other public place and from time to time some stranger would walk up and ask to play. We wanted him in the game as quickly as possible before he has a chance to watch and find out that he doesn't know a thing about playing for money. (Later we also learned that didn't help us if we didn't get a deposit from an unknown player.)
Two weeks ago a new player showed up that I met on the internet. Seemed like a nice guy, and lived nearby, but in keeping with our rules, I asked him for a $300 deposit. He proceeded to win 31 points in a row against me, Bill B., and Greg Merriman, and then others showed up. I quickly returned his deposit and he walked away the big winner for the day with a lot more than 31 points. Yesterday he came to my place and didn't do so well...he only won 13 points. We really know how to hustle these new fish!
We take our chouette rules very seriously in Chicago. In case you haven't seen one of our score sheets, we actually have the important rules written at the bottom of every sheet to avoid conflicts. Here they are:
1. NO GAMBLING. We are here to have fun and for intelektual simulation. Make a living somewhere else.
2. POOR SPORTSMANSHIP is highly encouraged. If you are caught cheating, you must sit out one game.
3. DRESS CODE IS STRICTLY ENFORCED. If you wear a dress, make it a short one.
4. WATCH YOUR LANGUAGE. Only Russian, Turkish, Greek, Yiddish, German and English. No French.
5. PATRONIZE THIS ESTABLISHMENT, they are fools to allow us here, so be nice to them.
Tip your waiter well--he’d rather be somewhere else and someone else too! ©1987 Phil Simborg, all rights reserved.
