We have very fast computers, that can deliver 2-ply rollouts in a reasonable time only for 2 or 3 years now. Do you think there were NO 4.5, 3.5 or 3.0 players in 2005, 2003 or 2002?

Strong players have been improving their game with rollouts since 1991-92 with Expert Backgammon) and especially since 1994 with beta JellyFish -- the commercial version that could do rollouts was released in 1995.

"This is what jellyfish with its rollouts will be able to do for us -- help us reestablish our priorities for early and middle-game positions which we previously had just been guessing at. I know that I have changed several aspects of my game after seeing the results of the rollouts." -- Kit Woolsey, Feb. 1995

Strong players were still improving their game with rollouts in 2002.

Do bots now play so well that rollouts are not needed by most of us who aspire to world class status? I think the answer is obviously no. Just think how much less educational the discussions in this and other forums would be if the only bot data we had to go on was evaluations without rollouts.

Our fast computers today are still too slow if you ask me, but I'm not complaining.

"Unfortunately it requires a very fast chip to be able to play Jellyfish letting it run its 2-ply analysis without taking an uncomfortably long time between moves." -- Kit Woolsey, Jan. 1995

"Incidentally, my anecdotal evidence so far indicates that [a] on a 386, level 5 is the highest one playable in real time; [b] on a 486, level 6 is playable in real time only if the chip-speed is greater than 33.2 MHz...." -- John Bazigos, Feb. 1995
