Some more data in the search for under 4.0 players in the year 2000.

In 1998, Harald Johanni started publishing his Computer Ranking List of players ranked by Snowie error rate in live matches. The matches were from 1996, 1997, and 1998. They were analyzed with Snowie version 1. He continued collecting matches and updating the Computer Ranking List through 1999, when his Backgammonmagazin ceased publication.

Frankly, I can't figure out what he did, exactly, with the raw checker and cube numbers to come up the list as it was published through 1999. But no matter -- they were Snowie 1 analyses, anyway.

The latest Johanni Computer Ranking List I can find was published in Backgammon Today in 2000 of the top 50. For this list, I believe all matches had been reanalyzed with Snowie 3. The year 2000 list had 11 players rated under 4.0 and 14 more players under 4.5.

The top 25:

  • 1. Dirk Schiemann, 16 matches, 2.9
  • 2. Jerry Grandell, 19 matches, 3.3
  • 3. Johannes Levermann, 40 matches, 3.6
  • 4. Peter Heitmuller, 9 matches, 3.6
  • 5. Herb Gurland, 2 matches, 3.6
  • 6. Paul Magriel, 6 matches, 3.7
  • 7. Hendrik Muysers, 5 matches, 3.7
  • 8. Mogens Knudsen, 2 matches, 3.7
  • 9. Andreas Martens, 2 matche, 3.9
  • 10. Najib Salamzy, 2 matches, 3.9
  • 11. Mads Andersen, 6 matches 4.0
  • 12. Steve Sax, 24 matches 4.0
  • 13. Harald Johanni, 63 matches, 4.1
  • 14. Elliott Winslow, 11 matches, 4.1
  • 15. Kent Goulding, 7 matches 4.2
  • 16. Stefan Bohr, 2 matches, 4.2
  • 17. Sigurd Karwen, 3 matches, 4.2
  • 18. Karsten Nielsen, 14 matches, 4.2
  • 19. Neil Kazaross, 4 matches, 4.2
  • 20. Nack Ballard, 4 matches 4.23
  • 21. Peter Jes Thomsen, 3 matches, 4.5
  • 22. Jorgen Granstedt, 6 matches, 4.5
  • 23. Leo Fernandez, 6 matches, 4.5
  • 24. Bill Robertie, 6 matches, 4.5
  • 25. Michael Meyburg, 27 matches, 4.5

* Since the list was still based on matches played as far back as 1996, it doesn't tell us who was playing under 4.0 in the year 2000.

* Davis, Holm, Humke, Natanzon, Korner, Sconyers, Lidov, Horan, Shimodaira, Frigo, Senkiewic, Hellwag, Cross, Montgomery, Ring and Jonas are among the second 25. But many players active then weren't on the list at all, like Woolsey, Tardieu, Trabolt, Weaver, Trice, McNeil, Svobodny, Riskin, Storer ... Snellings? Sylvester?

There probably weren't many more players, though, who may have been playing under 4.0 (according to Snowie 3 analysis) in 2000.
