Any advice on how to avoid eating Whoppers of this sort?.

I think that if you had realized that after 24/22 13/8 White has 17 ways (2s, 4-3, 6-3, 5-4) to hit you on your 14 point, and 2 additional ways (5-3) to point on your 22 point, you'd have seen that the chance of being sent to the bar that led you to reject 14/7* so quickly was hardly much less after 24/22 13/8. And then you'd probably have seen that considerations other than safety favor 14/7*.

How direct and indirect shots have a way of adding up is just one of the things I need to remind myself, sometimes, to remember to watch for.
