In Response To: Illegal moves rules in other games (Bob Koca)

In international checkers, you can condone an illegal play by replying to it, or ask it to be played legal. The way it works if my opponent makes an illegal play is that I stop the clock, say that an illegal play has been made, and if the opponent does not agree with that we can call the arbiter. If then nothing happens, I'd tell my opponent to restore the position and make a legal play, and then I'd hit the clock.

Restoring the position and playing legally can be difficult because the rules require you to take the most pieces, remove pieces only after completing the taking, and when you have a King it is not always easy to see how to take the most and where to end the move.

If my opponent is confused I'd usually help in restoring the position and making a legal play. If my position is easily losing after the legal play I just resign.

This works well in practice and there are only very few occasions with illegal plays.
