It always seems to me that, with a Swiss format, there are an approximate 'natural' number of rounds depending upon the entry size, and that you would then work out the match lengths from that. For example, if you had 32 players you would want 5 rounds. That way, one player finishes on 5/5 producing an outright winner. If you add an extra round with this entry size then, half the time, two players join that player on 5 wins producing a 3 way tie, with all the resultant dubious tie breaking criteria this can entail. The same kind of thing happens if you have insufficient rounds. With 64 players you don't schedule 5 rounds for example.

Of course, you rarely get a perfect number like 32 or 64, and players might drop out but, it seems to me that, if you expect about 30 players, then you anticipate 5 rounds.

None of this answers the questions, of course.
