when ahead in the race... prime?

This scenario comes up frequently in backgammon. The bots have taught me that it is best to deny your opponent his big running numbers. Unless the race lead is substantial, do not give your opponent good running numbers. This is true only if your resulting position is not brittle. Our checkers remain flexible after 7/1 6/3.
If we allow our opponent to more easily run, he is not shackled to the anchor because our inner board is weak. The hit and cover rolls for Blue are limited if White runs. Even if White is hit, he does not face many gammon losses and should be able to re-enter quickly. Blue cannot not hit loose because a return hit would swing the game in White's favor. By running White can effectively play an anchor waiting game with only one checker on the 20 point. And White can attempt to catch up to the race by running one of the checkers on the anchor. Blue's weak board allows White to try two simultaneous approaches to win. Thus, it is best to try to eliminate the race option for White.
