I think what you might not have taken into account is whether the resulting position leaves a blot on the 8pt (which adds incentive to hitting the second checker).

Check and write down the better play (and by how big a margin) for the following six situations (1a, 1b, 2a, 2b, 3a, 3b), and in each case note which of H or K leaves a blot on the 8pt:

...(1) John's position (shown above)
...(2) Move one of Blue's 6pt spares to the 8pt (three-three distribution).
...(3) Move one of Blue's 8pt checkers from 8pt to 6pt (one-five distribution).

...(a) Keep roll of 43
...(b) Change roll to 32
