3/1* 9/7(2) 8/6 is creative (for related idea, see a match Robertie-Barabino, annotated by Roy Friedman in "World Class Backgammon, Move by Move"), but I don't see that being hit is helpful. Besides, you might end up with a lone, useless checker on the 1 point. The idea behind switching from the 3 to the 1 point is to keep White from being able to attack the back checkers with both numbers on the dice. He may come in and leave a blot somewhere else. If not, the tempo gained is useful to try to escape.
