Chuck is most likely Charles Lawton.... Who I served with in the Navy for six months or so. Woke him up most days so that he would not be late. He took on all challengers in speed chess and table tennis and gave almost everyone a spot in both. I dont think I ever saw him lose at either even with spots.

I believe he later won the US armed services chess championship sometime in the mid 70s.
