It is on a good spot for the race

Being down 12 pips in a race to 93 and not on roll isn't the sort of position I think of as where I'd like to have my spares for the race. This is clearly a holding position where you hope to get and hit a shot. I agree to 'securing the point' argument but wouldn't call 5/2 wasteful. To me there's simply no downside to making the point now.
