Dupe 3s with 6/5 with the last spare on the 6 point, or slot 8/7 with 24 ways to cover (plus some ways to advance the blot) instead of 18 but giving 5s to hit? 5 point probably the (only slightly) better point here but it's not better at all if doesn't get made. 5-3 hits both ways, 5-5 you'd rather to get hit with (I think, instead of being down 30 pips), 5*-2 5*-1 and 5*-3 give returns, 5*-6 too ( quite a few, although indirect).

"Never start the 5 point with the last spare on the 6 point." Who said that?
