Gin positions

In Response To: Gin positions (Barry Silliman)

I had a similar experience, except he was at match point. He held his hand out in anticipation of my 'resignation', fully expecting me to accept it and concede the game and match. When I explained to him that I hadn't worked out whether it was gin yet, and that it was quicker for me to roll, he was clearly annoyed. Perhaps only one or two rolls later, I was satisfied that it was now gin, and offered my hand. Still clearly peeved, he wouldn't accept it, saying sarcastically "Are you sure" or similar. To defuse the situation I had to state, self-effacingly, that I wasn't as quick as working it out as him, but I was now sure he'd won. This seemed to do the trick.

Reality was, it probably wasn't gin when he offered my resignation and, even if it was, I very much doubt that he had worked this out. (I should add that there had been no tensions leading up to this conclusion, ie no 'prior history'.)

Some time afterwards, you run through what you could (or 'should') have said to them, which is not very printable here of course. OTB my inclination to seek harmony with people immediately won out, as it nearly always does, but there's still a constant battle being fought.

Isn't winning the match enough for some players?
