WSOP Main Event Final Table Delay

I see this as a lot of good and not much drawback.

The Good

  • For those of us who do watch it on ESPN we won't know the winner beforehand. (unless we really want to know, whereas before you were bound to find out before you saw it on tv, whether you wanted to or not)
  • Players will get paid. Not that making the final table wasn't enough, that's a guaranteed million, but now they'll have time to sort through the sponsorship offers and take what's to their liking instead of taking what's shoved down their throats the night before not knowing what they're really signing up for.
  • The possibility of increased suspense. I say 'possibility' because if it's a final table of nobodys, who cares, but if there happen to be a couple of name players I think it will be more interesting.
  • The time between July & November will give all players at the final table a chance to change their game, to study the other players, to figure out how they want to attack the final table. This is also why I believe it will be more interesting with a couple of seasoned pros, see how they plan on tackling the other fish at their table. They'll be able to review WSOP video footage of that very year and pick up on tells.
  • Will some of the "online players" who make the final table take the opportunity to employ a real pro to prepare them for the final table? More opportunities for pros to get paid even if they didn't make the FT or ITM of the main event.
  • How smart of a move is it by both ESPN & the Rio? ESPN will have multiple programs leading up to the main event FT, hype it up, get a lot more viewers, all of which I believe to be good for poker overall, so no complaints from me. The Rio? Well if they had the FT as they normally do, there would still be a bunch of poker bums milling about to watch it, now they'll possibly draw more people back in November, more business.
  • Players at the FT will now have time to bring out their entire cheering squads. Friends, family, pets, everyone will be invited making for an all out fan war. Good for tv, good for poker? Eh...who knows, I can live with it though.

Most of that was covered in the article, restating. I don't see much of a downside, good move for poker.
