I liked your explanation. If you make the 8, all 4s go to the 4 points and don't create immediate blots, which is not the case with the main alternative, so you are protecting against a trouble number of the next roll. You also are more likely to end up with a spare on the 4, because you have more numbers that go there immediately, and by killing 6s, you have more time to roll any of your good numbers.
