Your point about the critical number is key, I think. I did take a look at the best play but just did not like the gap. Another reason that I was not too worried about making the four was that I still had plenty of spares on the high points. But not, on closer inspection, on the point that matters: the five point. (If the two spares on 3 were moved to the 5 for example, then making the 4 pt is in fact slightly the best play (at ++) .)

After I made this play I remembered one of Robertie's pieces of advice from Modern Backgammon with respect to the bear in. Namely that it is often better to create stacks when bearing in than to make inner board points. This is one of those cases.
