One of the most important factors is the strength of your offensive position. You need to win the vast majority of the games after a hit. I know this is obvious, but the most common mistake I see being made in these positions, besides improper passes, is players taking games when they have an offensive defect in their position. Such defects encourage breaking the midpoint, leaving an indirect shot, as well as occasionally volunteering a direct shot before the prime/board is solid.
