When you double at the moment you are on the fence about being too good, there is very little chance you will get an erroneous take from your opponent.

This is not my experience in practice. I've had many opponents, who know that I'm stronger than they are, interpret my hesitation (when I deliberate about being too good) as uncertainty about whether or not I'm good enough to double.

Of course this is often in volatile positions where I've just benefited from a joker sequence and my opponent has not quite mentally adjusted to how much the situation on the board has changed.
