I love your thinking and approach. The winners get plenty of prizes, including money and trophies and recognition. Especially in the beginners division, the goal of a tournament is to have as many people as possible walk away feeling good about the experience so they decide to continue to play backgammon.

So instead of a random drawing, I would actually have a drawing for everyone who doesn't cash or win a trophy...that way more people win something.

And you can also have some really fun, smaller prizes. I ran a tournament for kids and every time someone rolled 6-6 they raised their hand and got a gold dollar. Think of some fun things for the beginners like that.
