My first major was the last Black & White tournament held in Chicago, in January, 1980. I had been playing seven months and hadn't discovered I wasn't one of the top ten players in the world, so of course I entered the Championship division. There were 128 players, many top of players of the era, a few top players of all time. Among the latter was Mike Senkiewicz. I had either already heard of Mike, or during the tournament someone filled me in, because when he reached the final I knew he was a top pro.
He faced a New York stockbroker named Jack Furey, and came away with first place, eleven thousand dollars. All in a day's work.
I've never played him Scrabble(tm), but in the fall of '83, when I played a bit, I was playing Dennis Stone for fifty bucks in the hallway of the Tropicana, outside the playing room for the backgammon tournament. After the game Mike, who'd kibitzed, told me I missed a bingo. I'd played CORNY and had an IL on my rack.
One of the great things about Mike (and if you find yourself sitting with him some tournament meal you should keep it in mind) is that you can have a terrific conversation without talking about backgammon.
