When rollouts show choices to be close, I like to learn the advantages and disadvantages in each choice. If it is close, there must be both. Note that while making a key point in the opening is thematic, so is hitting on the five point with an ace. Among other things, hitting prevents the opponent from making key points the next turn with many rolls. As Peter points out, this is more important after 43S than it is after 54S. In particular, look at 5-1, 6-2 & 6-3 which make key points after 43S 61P but do little after 54S 61P. 5-3 & 5-5 make the five point instead of the three point. And 2-1, 3-2 & 4-3 get the consolation prize of the 10 point rather than nothing. 1-1, 3-1, 3-3 & 4-4 are better after 54S 61P, but don't add up to as much.
Remembering this theme may sometimes help us on the third roll as well. Check out 64R, 43S, 61. I may have erred on this one prior to this discussion.
