CO >> is technically NOT a draw! If it was defined as one then, logically and mathematically, they should share the points for a win (3) and a loss (1), giving them 2 points each.
WADR, I'm not sure about your maths and logic here. I think there are many different ways different sports handle awarding points. For example the world famous English Premier League - 3 points for a win, 0 points for a loss, 1 point for a draw. Most think it's a decent system.
Are you suggesting that they are doing it wrong and that it would be better for them to adopt your idea of sharing the points for a win and a loss and therefore be awarded 1.5 points for a draw??
CO >> So, the system in use arbitrarily over scores the intrinsic value of that players results, underemphasising the impact of the default!
Please do try to look at it from another perspective. I interpret it as winning one match (3 points total) being rewarded more than losing two matches (2 points total). This seems to 'feel right' to me. Is it agreeable to you?
I don't agree with your "intrinsically correct '2,1,0' system" that 2 losses should have the same value as a single win (or a win plus a default). And I don't agree that introducing negative numbers (or halves) complies with the KISS principle you mentioned.
CO >> In terms of it's mathematical basis, it should not be respected.
I don't know enough maths / historical FIBS background about why this system was initially chosen, for me to disrespect it.
I've played in FLG for years and I do know that it seems to work quite well. In fact I've never heard anything negative against their 3W-0D-1L scoring system (other than your comment).
CO >> I wonder actually how often such defaults occur in these leagues
Speaking for the SBL, approximately 95% of the scheduled matches were played in our first season (91/96 x 11 point matches).
We are hoping to improve upon this in Season 2 since the replacement of three of the less reliable / busy players, better tech solutions for communication including cloud-based P2P scheduling plus the introduction of a practical 'claim forfeit' system.
