Still this has nothing to do with mathematically correct or incorrect, it is just how people creating a game (or sport) or people running a tournament or league wish to award points to promote an interesting game. (I personally like 2/1/0 BTW, but would not want to say that is the only correct way.)

And if three finish 2-4, I have no problem awarding each a silver - only one competitor was better, so hand out the silverware!
