White is Player 2
score: 0
pip: 162Unlimited Game pip: 160
score: 0
Blue is Player 1XGID=-a-a--E-CAA-dC-a-c-e----B-:0:0:1:42:0:0:0:0:10 Blue to play 42 Making the 4pt would leave 22 shots (any 6, plus 54, 52, 43, 42, 44, 33, and 22), so that's out.
Making the 9pt, while splitting to the 22pt, would leave 11 shots outside (63, 61, 54, 52, 43, and 33), which is also more than I care to volunteer. In addition to these 11 shots, 55 and 53 would also make one or two points on Blue's head in White's inner board.
So that leaves 13/9 10/8, a perfectly safe play.
Thanks, Timothy, for sharing these positions.
Mike
P.S. I was rereading Jeremy Bagai's Classic Backgammon Revisited this week. If I recall correctly, there are one or two of these "4pt vs. 9pt" problems in that book.
