Not really, unfortunately. As I said to Peever, this is one of the many classes of problems that I've been amassing examples of but that I don't understand very well. Reviewing the comments that have been posted by others in this thread will probably give you more insight than I can provide. This final problem is particularly puzzling to me; of course, making the 9pt is a satisfactory play, but I don't really have a feel for why it's O.K. to make the 4pt and leave so many shots.
