New Rules Questions

In Response To: New Rules Questions (Stick)

I try to vary my pronouns. I don't always remember, and maybe it isn't random, but if you read my pieces you'll see that I do slip in a "she" every so often for variety.

That said, I once overheard a suspicious phone call between a relatively inexperienced female player who was on break during a money round she was surprised to find herself in, and the more experienced player she was sleeping with that weekend. If my ears did not deceive, as I passed by the pay phone en route to the toilet, they were discussing cube strategy at 4-away, 3-away. Strangely, this was the score her match had reached when she went on break.

Perhaps I should have reported this, but even if a director monitored the match, how would she know if the lady had profited from such sage advise? Oddly enough, the coach in this incident was himself involved later in an infamous incident at another tournament where he challenged a player to a fight, claiming the other player had been signalling one of the two beginners finalists, and she happened to be playing the woman he was sleeping with that tournament.

But enough old gossip!

You aren't the first player of a certain age I have heard whimper that banning his use of headphones would have "consequences." I grew up in a generation that had it very easy. But my goodness what children my peers raised! You poor, pampered, self-entitled darlings! Is the mean old tournament director going to deprive you of one of your pacifiers? You might have to do without a second form of entertainment (I assume backgammon is entertainment) for the length of a match. How tragic! Sure, shutting out your opponent (or anyone you are passing time with) is rude, a way of saying: "On the scale of things, you sir or madam, do not matter much, and certainly do not amuse me." But mummy and daddikins taught their precious boy that he was number one, and whatever junior wants, he gets.

Understand, I am only picking on you because you are the Whackamole that popped his head up at the right moment. Personally, I don't give a shit if my opponents wear headphones, and would never ask that they be banned. But the idea that headphones are a deal breaker strikes me as rather funny.
