In 1985 there was a strike by the culinary union in Las Vegas. One of the hotels whose workers were out for a long time, and whose terms were most bitterly contested, was the Marina, a then mid-sized resort located where the current MGM Grand now sits. One day someone called in a bomb threat. The security forces, searching for anything suspicious, noticed that a van in the parking lot was rocking, as though occupied.
They ordered the people inside to open up, and were shocked to find it full of equipment, including a live feed of one of the baccarat tables. Inside the casino a player was filming the shuffle using a camera in his belt buckle. The camera was, being lower than the typical line of sight, able to see the values of the cards as they were riffled, and could be used to determine the order of entire strings.
The information was transmitted with, as I recall, microwaves to the van, where a computer analyzed the strings, and transmitted back to the player information on how to bet. (Players have no control over the play of the hands in baccarat.)
Keith Taft, the fellow who put all that together, is dead. But that was in 1985.
If the money is big enough, it is doable. But, I agree with Stick, I am not worried in the least. I gave him a mild spanking in a different place in this overall thread, but the only times I have seen the issue come up, it was the opponent hoping to win a mind game by banning the other's headphones. (And Stick has conceded the game by alerting everyone that he will forfeit his match if he headphones are banned.) Hard to side with jerks like that.
